Term 1 Reflection

Dear Mrs. Roberts
This terms art class has been the best class I have ever taken, I have learned so much and always enjoy coming to class. Art has always been my favorite subject but this year expesially has been so much fun and I have really enjoyed all the projects and activities we do. Things like Drop Everything and Draw really challenged me and my artistic skills and pushed me to really create my best work. Although they were sometimes frustrating I never gave up and fought through to create some pretty interesting and realistic drawings. This not only boosted my confidence in my art but helped me to become a better artist too. Being in this class I have not only grown as an artist but I have learned so much. I have really learned to be patient in my art work and that sometimes having to erase parts of your work and start over does not always mean you messed up. I think my level of different types of artwork has really grown in this past term. Usually I only do sketches but I was surprised that I have come to start using other materials and found that I love to do magazine collages! I have also done a wide variety of things in my sketch book and tried my best not to limit myself. I was also surprised at how open and creative this art class has been, although we have been assigned projects in no way are everyones the same, we all get to add our own creativity and twist to each project. The most enjoyable thing though that we did was our sketch books. That really allowed me to be as creative as I wanted to and never have be judged by anyone, I really like trying out new things in there and being that I do art on a regular basis it was a great place for me to hold it all in one place. For next term I would like to continue to work in my art journal over the winter and I would advise myself to try to keep practicing new technics, and to improve on others. My goal by the end of the year is to have that journal completely full! To grow as an artist I need to simply just keep doing what I am doing now. I think since I want to go to an art college when I grow up I need to start collecting all my work in a portfolio, try new things, and improve on my skills that I have now. I think I could really improve my sketching and collaging technics if I just keep working on them. Although I love to do art, I don't always have time for it with my busy schedule but I have decided that since I want art to be in my future I need to keep improving my skills so one day I can be the artist I have always wanted to be. I want to thank you so much for opening my eyes to just how many possibilities in art there are out there. I really enjoyed having you as a teacher and really enjoyed working and sharing my work with you. I am so excited to continue having you as my teacher in the spring. You are by far the best teacher I have had in art, or any class!

Chair With Coat

HOW did you find today's still life more or less complicated to draw than the still lives over the past few weeks (white paper, sticks, fabric)? Be specific.

HOW did you use some of the skills we've developed over the past three weeks drawing more complicated still lives to draw the chair with coat today? What are these skills?

I found this still life to take more time than the others but not necessarily harder or easier its just more combining both methods we used with the sticks and the fabrics. You had to use fluid soft movements for the coat and more lined hard or jagged movements with the chair. I started with simply the basics of the chair and coat just lightly sketching then added the darker and lighter spots and then added shadows and highlights. I used this skill from are drawings over the past couple of weeks. Another skill I used was to almost look more at the still life then your drawing.

Glass Half Full Project.

Describe the concept for your work.
Describe how the process of making this piece went for you.
What struggles did you encounter?
What did you discover?
What feedback did you get along the way and from whom?
What aspects of the work do you think are most successful?

The concept for my work was the pluses and minuses of going to a horse show. The process of making this piece was easy for me because for some reason the ideas just flowed out and i immediately knew what I wanted to do. The only struggle i encountered is where to put certain things on the paper and what to do for the backgrounds of each picture. I discovered that when i finished my piece it looked a lot like the list i had made of things to include in it. The way things were organized and placed on the page made it seem like a list. Silmar and Nikki said I should maybe do gray on the background on the minuses one but I decided that it may look to drastic like that and i didn't want the other part to look to bland with no background. I think the way i represented things with pictures was most successful in my piece.
