Color & Value Research Planning

 GEORGES SEURAT - EDEN CONCERT
EDWARD HOPPER - GIRL AT SEWING MACHINE
LEONARDO DE VINCI - STUDY OF HORSES
JOHN SINGER SARGENT - WOMAN IN TURQOISE

2. Compare and contrast how color is used in the two paintings. How does the use of color communicate the concept of the work of art?

COMPARING AND CONTRASTING: both of one subject (a woman), one watercolor, one in acrylic or oil, one has reds and warm colors except green (reminds me of sunrise), representing time (morning)? darker reds though as though putting a mood of sadness. The other has cool colors, blues and turquoises and purple, and yellow. Has a sense of youth and innocence. playful fun colors. the way the dress is painted in shapes and an almost 3d effect. The first one has a prominent background and the other is focused on the girl. There are not a lot of contrasting colors in the painting but they both contrast each other a lot.

3. Compare and contrast how value is used in the two drawings. How does the use of value communicate the concept of the work of art?

The first one of the Horse is very lightly sketched and then goes into greater detail.  It has a very light back ground compared to the other one which is very dark. The other one has very dark colors and not as detailed.

Thinking About Drawing and Painting

We can access images of anything via the internet and snap photos with our phones, so why are drawing and painting still viable methods for making images?

Art is a way of expressing our thoughts and feeling. Simply taking a picture of something doesn't always exactly express our ideas. But making something from our own mind using our imaginations and thoughts allows us to really express them. When taking a picture of something its a set moment in time, unchanged. But with drawing and painting u can erase, paint over, change things in any way you like. You have an immense freedom to create anything you can image. While you can only photograph anything in the world.

Changing photographs to fit our imagination: http://www.divinecaroline.com/22343/102342-drawing-vs-photography personally i think this is one of the coolest things ever! definitely going to do more of these in my free time!

Found Marks

Over the next few days I would like you to be on the lookout for marks in the world that are not made by humans. If you have access to a camera please photograph at least 10 of these "found marks" and upload them to this post in your blog. If you don't have access to a camera, you may describe the marks you found in detail instead. If you choose to write, describe what made the mark, exactly where you saw it, and when you saw it (date and time of day). Images from the internet are not acceptable!

Reflection

Reflecting at the end of the year. Look through your blog. Go all the way back to the beginning of the year. Look especially closely at your finished work. Think about how the year has gone for you. Now, write a detailed paragraph that describes how the course has gone for you. What have you found to be your artistic strengths? What have been your challenges? What do you think you’ll leave the class thinking about? How can you see it influencing your life in the future? LABELS: reflection

This year has been an amazing year of art for me. Not only have I learned a lot and grown as an artist but I have really enjoyed this year with you as my teacher. My work I have finished this year I found has developed and gotten better and better and more creative. My love for art has really been strengthened by taking this class. I have found I love doing collages and working in 3D art but my drawing skills have really improved as well. Drawing is most definitely my greatest art strength but I am looking forward to expanding my horizons and challenging my self. The only real challenge I have had this year is dealing with the tragic loss of my art journal :( After it being lost now for about a month I am starting to worry I may never get it back. I had just finished the journal and it has this entire years art work in it, including some personal things too. This year I think I will leave the class thinking about my lost art journal sitting  behind some cabinet in a cold dark corner, or in a smelly pile of trash at a dump. Mostly though I will be thinking about how much I will miss this class, and how I cant wait to get back up there next year and work with you again! This class is not only the best art class I have ever taken but also the best class in general. I will take all that i have learned from this class and use it in all my future years of art (which will hopefully be many). My freshman year will be remembered as the year I took an amazing art class, with the great Mrs. Roberts! I can't wait till next year when I get to be up there for 2 art classes!!

Paper Cranes for Japan Project

Describe what images and/or facts stayed with you from what you saw and read about the devastation in Japan. Now make a list of at least three wishes you have for the people of Japan. Add a picture of a paper crane to the post.

I saw many videos of the devastation in Japan. It was so sad to see so many people homes, boats, cars and even other possessions, float by and there was nothing they could do. It must have been so hard for these people to watch as there home was destroyed, to not be able to stop it. I heard one story of a man who when he realized his wife and mother were not with him, was told to report them as missing, and wait 2 DAYS for the rescue workers to come and hopefully find them. He knew he couldn't stand around and wait, so he took action. He swam into his house and managed to hold his breath long enough to find them. They were stuck in the bedroom with only a foot of breathing room left. He helped them out of the house and they survived. If he hadn't have done that, and been so brave, they would have surely died with the rising water level. Its so inspirational to hear these stories about how brave these people are.

WISHES:
1. That all the homes and buildings will be able to be rebuilt.
2. That the nuclear problems with the food would be solved/stopped.
3. That no more people will die for reasons relating to this tragedy.

Getting back to materials

Insert a photo of the self portrait you made in class today. In a post on your blog explain why you chose the materials you did for today’s project, then describe how you decided to use the materials you chose. What was the process for making what you made? How do you feel about the finished product?

For this project I didn't have many choices for materials, but the one i thought would be a lot of fun was this bendy wire string stuff. It was in a huge role and u could bend it into different shapes thats why i thought it would be easiest to use. Fist when i started to make my self portrait I made the oval of my face and twisted the ends together so they would stay. Then I used the symmetry lines of drawing faces to use a line to create the 2 eyes on and a line to create the mouth. I had to bend them into the shapes of these features though. Next I put the nose attaching to the line between the 2 eyes. Then i used to strands to outline hair. One challenging part was that the wire wasn't completely bendable to it would sometimes twist apart or the lines of the eyes and mouth would move lower and higher than where they should be. The finished project although it isn't a masterpiece I think does look like a face, this project felt like more of a fun thing to get back into my creative side and doing art in school again.
